POLICE OFFICER

Day 1. 09/02/1890.
Dear Lucy,
My wife, my sun, my life.
It is only two days since you are, but it feels like two weeks! I am waiting impatiently for the day when you will come back in a month and a half. Is the path to the Grand Canyon comfortable? Isn’t it too hot? Is your father nice to you?
It’s hard to come back from work every night and sleep alone, cook my own meals, and clean the dishes, wash, laundry, etc... My job as policeman tires me a lot, not in terms of difficulty, but because I have to stay vigilant all time. But I have to work hard to earn money! As you know, I started to work for the NYPD only three weeks ago, and we are preparing a celebration that will occur the 19th of November for the anniversary of the 45th year of the creation of the New York Police Department in 1845. My work is not very hard for now. I only have to keep an eye on Cross Street or watch the arrival of the train so that there is no accident. But yesterday the chief asked us to go outside of Manhattan and see what was going on. Eight other policemen and I took a little boat, and on the other side of the Hudson River, horses were waiting for us. We didn’t see anything alarming, but we could still see that the place, spacially Brooklyn, wasn’t as safe as Manhattan because the streets were dark, and we saw people with strange comportement that looked dangerous, even though Manhattan wasn’t completely safe. When we came back to the office, he said we did a good job and we could go back home.

Day 2. 09/11/1890.
Dear Lucy,
Your last letter illuminated my life like a fire in the dark. I was happy. Happy to know you received my letter, happy to have your news, happy to realize you were coming back in three and a half month. You miss me as the flower misses the sun…
I also have bad news. Some teenagers stole my bike, and until I find a new one, I will have to go to the office by foot, which is much longer, but a bike is still expensive… This morning, after 45 minutes of walking to work, Chief Rodrigo called me and the fourteen other men that belong to my teams (I have two very good friends in those fourtheen) into the main room. There, he told us about the past of the NYPD. During his presentation, he ta ught us that before 1845, when there were no policemen, watchmen did our job, but they weren’t serious at all. Crimes were still happening, and they mostly stayed in the watchouses that were created for them. That’s why it wasn’t surprising for anybody to found a dead body in the street in the morning or to learn someone stole everything in a store etc… He insisted that we were part of the first policemen and that the future of the NYPD was in our hands. After his speech, I felt important, and when I was checking Broadway that day, I did it seriously. That night, Henry invited me to have dinner with him. I met his wife and passed a very good time. Afterwards, I got back home, and lay on the cold bed. Once again, I realized I would have to sleep alone this night.

Day 3. 09/ 27/ 1890.
Dear Lucy,
Finally you arrived to the phenomen, the hole in the ground, the grand canyon… Don’t tell me anything more about it. I prefer to hear it from your mouth when you will be back. It is very cold in New York and I can’t imagine how it is in the West.
Marco (my second friend) came back three days ago from a 5 month trip in Great Britain. He had been sent by the NYPD to learn more about the British police force and bring back some good ideas. Indeed, England was the first country to create a police department, in 1800. Actually, our organization was created after this one. As we did, they started with watchmen, but the number of crimes still grew and grew. The army was needed a lot, and finally the government decided to create the police, a special force to make sure the laws were applied. After Marco, England is a great place, especially London where he spent most of the time. He also had the time to visit, and I swear when I have enough money, we will go there together.
When the day was finished and Marco had given his report, we drank a glass of beer in a pub. You know, until now I didn’t really like New York, but I’m getting closer and closer to the city. I’ll finish this letter by two great pieces of news. First of all, I found my bike, a few blocks away from the house, a little broken but it’s okay. But that’s not it! Chief Rodrigo told me I was doing a great job, and that he was thinking seriously about giving me a promotion. But for now, my only desire is for you to come back very very soon.

                                   Day 7 :5/11/18

                                     Day 8 : 29/11/18

.
Day 9: 12/11/18
